North Myrtle Beach, SC- The Board of Directors of the North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce voted to reaffirm its support taken in 2007 to support the county’s Myrtle Beach International Airport Expansion project recommendations provided the ownership and governance of the existing Horry County Airport System remain with Horry County.
According to Chamber board Chairman Ed Horton, in a letter to Horry County Council Chairman Liz Gilland, “Our current position reflects the uncertainty we hear and read about regarding the long term ownership and governance of the Horry County Airport System which includes the Myrtle Beach International Airport as well as airports in North Myrtle Beach, Conway, and Loris.” Chairman Horton further stated “we felt the responsible thing for us to do, as a business organization, was to adopt a position of support which protects the tax dollars invested in this project by our local taxpayers.”
Chamber President & CEO Marc Jordan added “We support the county’s expeditious action to move this project forward and understand this requires additional funding, but we want to be assured that these funds are protected from action beyond our control to place ownership of our airports under some other authority’s governance.” Jordan went on to say that “We will use whatever positive influence we have to assure that the Grand Strand Airport in North Myrtle Beach, as well as general aviation airports in Conway and Loris remain operational and governed by Horry County. These facilities are vitally important to our future economic development and quality of life.”
