Rain or shine, the 22nd Annual Intracoastal
Christmas Regatta is scheduled for Saturday, November 25th. The
Regatta has become a traditional, festive and unique way for countless Horry
County residents and visitors to begin the holiday season.
Captain Poo McLauchlin and his niece, Susie
Watson came up with the idea of the Christmas Regatta 22 years ago.
Decorated boats parade from Little River Inlet south to Dock Holiday’s
Marina. During the past 20 years, a committee was formed for the Regatta
and each person works hard to see that the parade continues each year.
Please see the list of committee volunteers on the web page and let them
know how much you appreciate their hard work.
All proceeds from this event go to local
schools. “We work closely with the faculty to choose the children that are
in need of Christmas gifts.” says Watson. “No child should go without.”
“We put on the regatta for the less fortunate
children of our community and the child in all of us” said Watson. In 2005,
the Intracoastal Christmas Regatta assisted 363 families in the area.
A list of toy collection
sites and viewing locations is available at
www.nmbevents.com. “There are toy drop-off
locations throughout the area, including the North Myrtle Beach Chamber of
Commerce.”
If you would prefer to enjoy the parade on
water, you can ride the Hurricane Fleet in Little River. The cost is $20
per person and includes snacks. Boarding begins at 4:00 pm and the ride
lasts from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Call the Hurricane Fleet at 843-249-3571 for
more information.
“No matter the weather we always have a big
crowd turn out for the Regatta,” says Watson. Decorated boats parade from
Tilghman Point, through the historic Little River Waterfront, on south to
Dock Holiday’s Marina, located at 13th Avenue North, in North
Myrtle Beach. The Regatta will begin at 5:00 pm and will end around 7:00
pm. The entry fee for participating boats is $40. The Grand Prize is $1200
and a cash prize for the winner of each division. Boats are scored for
theme, originality, crew enthusiasm and decorations by a panel of judges.
“The Intracoastal
Regatta gets bigger and more successful each year and we’re glad that it has
become a tradition in Horry County” added Watson. For additional
information on how you can be a part of the efforts of the Intracoastal
