May 30, 2017, North Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce, Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) today announced Louise Connell, supplier diversity manager at BMW Manufacturing Co., LLC, as the speaker for its June First Friday Business Builder. The monthly meeting will be held from 7:45 to 9:30 a.m. on Friday, June 2, at the Conference Center at Barefoot Resort.

The event is sponsored by The North Myrtle Beach Chamber Foundation, Inc., a 501 (c) (3), volunteer-based organization dedicated to support and advance the general welfare and prosperity of the greater North Myrtle Beach, S.C. area. The Foundation focuses on areas and programs that impact the community's quality of life, including civic, cultural, economic, educational and workforce development.

Connell will speak on the importance of Vendor Diversity, a business strategy that emphasizes the creation of a diverse supply chain that ensures the inclusion of diverse groups in the procurement plans for government, not-for-profits, and private industry. Vendor Diversity adds value to a company’s diversity strategy as it: showcases the company’s interest in and commitment to the economic growth of all communities; displays an organization’s commitment to doing business, beyond consumerism, in diverse markets; allows a company to take advantage of new opportunities for business expansion with the emergence of new consumer needs based upon shifting demographic realities; provides multiple channels from which to procure goods and services; and drives competition (on price and service levels) between the company’s existing and potential vendors.

Beginning her BMW career in 1996, Connell’s primary role has been within the purchasing department responsible for the procurement of body shop equipment. Throughout her tenure as a buyer, she has been responsible for purchasing fuel systems, axle assemblies and, most recently, interior components.

Connell assumed responsibility for the plant’s supplier diversity platform in 2011 and helped launch the company’s successful Tier 1 Supplier Diversity Matchmaker Conference. In this new role, Connell has helped BMW achieve their objectives to increase their year-to-date minority spend with both Tier 1 and 2 suppliers, increase outside awareness of BMW’s commitment to supplier diversity and increase the company’s community service outreach.

She has been recognized for her groundbreaking efforts and was awarded the YMCA Women of Achievement Award 2013 and the Carolinas Minority Vendor Development Council’s Business Manager 2012 Impact Award, among others. She is secretary of the Foothills Regional Advisory Committee and a member of the Carolinas Minority Vendor Development Council and the Greater Women’s Business Council. She has been featured in the Diversity/Careers Magazine for BMW Creative Networking for Diverse Vendors, SC Diversity Magazine, and one of the Top 30 Champions of Diversity in the Diversity Plus Magazine.

“We look forward to hosting Louise as our speaker for this month’s First Friday Business Builder on June 2,” said Marc Jordan, president and CEO at the North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce, CVB. “Her experience and expertise in diversity will be of great value to chamber businesses as they look to grow both their employee and supplier base.”
